2024 English Derby Final Preview
Trap 1 Whyaye Man - 20/1
Odds
Whyaye Man is the outsider of the final at odds of 20/1, those odds imply the dog has a 4.8% chance of landing the English Greyhound Derby.

Career Record
Races | Wins | 2nds | 3rds | 4ths | 5ths | 6ths |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
57 | 13 | 23 | 6 | 8 | 6 | 1 |
Form
Whyaye Man continued to overcome his qualifying odds with every passing round in the English Derby and now finds himself in the final for his trainer Mark Walis who last won the competition in 2012 with Blonde Snapper.
Last Saturday Night the dog posted its slowest early-paced sectional of the competition (4.19) but did enough to finish second coming 2.5 lengths behind winner De Lahdedah and clocked 29.00 himself.
Verdict
The dog may not be the quickest on the clocks, but is remarkably consistent throughout the competition posting 29.01, 28.98, 29.08 and 29.00. If he gets a little luck and improves a bit more on the track it's not without a chance but 20/1 remains a fair price.
Trap 2 Ballymac Gizmo - 20/1
Odds
Ballymac Gizmo can be gotten at 20/1 to land the English Greyhound Derby, this implies this brindle dog has a 4.8% chance of success in the race.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Form
Ballymac Gizmo is a lightly raced youngster bred in purple as the son of Ballymac Cooper and Ballymac Arminta. He has yet to win a heat in the competition but continues to display a strong running track craft that means he benefits from any trouble in races.
Last Saturday he continued his strong running form to finish third behind Churchfield Syd who came a HD ahead of King Memphis who Gizmo was HD behind clocking 29.11 which was its best run since its runner-up finish in the opening round to Antigua Hawk where he clocked 28.90
Verdict
There is plenty of improvement in this dog and a potential classic success in the future. That might even be Saturday Night if it has a bit of luck from in-behind.
Trap 3 King Memphis - 5/4
Odds
King Memphis is the 5/4 favourite for the English Derby; those odds imply the dog has a 44.4% chance of landing the McNair team their maiden success in the competition.
Pedigree
Sire: Droopys Sydney
Dam: Queen Beyonce
Career Record
Races | Wins | 2nds | 3rds | 4ths | 5ths | 6ths |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Form
King Memphis is the outright favourite to land the English Derby and has been so for the entirety of the competition being cut from 2/1 and EVS respectively in recent weeks. It’s easy to see why too when the dog went unbeaten in the first four rounds of the competition clocking 28.68, 28.78, 28.74 and 28.65.
Last Saturday he was defeated for the first time in the competition and finished a SHD behind Churchfield Syd in 28.98 after being beaten for early gears. However, he claimed the all-important final spot and may have put one of his “poorer runs” out of his system ahead of the final.
Verdict
King Memphis is a Superstar tracker and the deserved favourite for the English Derby, if any dog can beat him they will land the spoils themselves, but I can’t see him beaten.
Trap 4 De Lahdedah- 2/1
Odds
De Lahdedah is 2/1 to win the English Derby this implies the dog has a. 33.3% chance of success in this classic final.
Pedigree
Sire: Lenson Bocko
Dam: Ballymac Sarahjo
Career Record
Races | Wins | 2nds | 3rds | 4ths | 5ths | 6ths |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
25 | 13 | 2 | 6 | 1 | 3 | 2 |
Form
Also trained by Liam Dowling who is seeking his maiden success in the event De Lahdedah has been impressive throughout the competition winning his first two rounds stopping the clocks in a red-hot 28.78 and 28.91 that was followed by a third round where he finished runner-up but in an even quicker 28.64. The fourth round was his slowest run coming third in 29.69.
Last Saturday Night De Lahdedah booked his place in the final in style, stopping the clock in 28.79 to come 2.5 lengths ahead of closest challenger Whyaye Man.
Verdict
De Lahdedah has all the gears to land the English Derby and come Saturday Night he might be the best housed to challenge red-hot favourite King Memphis.
Trap 5 Churchfield Syd - 13/2
Odds
Churchfield Syd can be gotten as a 13/2 suggesting a 13.3% chance of English Derby success.
Pedigree
Sire: Droopys Sydney
Dam: Millbank Jade
Career Record
Races | Wins | 2nds | 3rds | 4ths | 5ths | 6ths |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
29 | 15 | 6 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 3 |
Form
Churchfield Syd is the most consistent early-paced dog in the English Derby if not the quickest having posted early sectional splits of 4.26, 3.99, 4.02, 4.01 and 4.02 throughout the competition so far. The dog has grown into the competition after initially finishing third in 29.76 and runner-up in 28.96. He would win the preceding two rounds clocking 29.19 and 29.08.
Syd earned his third successive heat victory last Saturday when he broke fast and made all to beat King Memphis by a HD.
Verdict
This dog has already shown he has the ability to beat King Memphis and if he pings the lids he has a serious chance of achieving an upset English Derby victory.
Trap 6 Boylesports Bob - 9/2
Odds
BoyleSports Bob is 9/2 to land the spoils on Saturday, this implies the dog has an 18.2% chance of success in the race.
Pedigree
Sire: Good News
Dam: Roanna Bess
Career Record
Races | Wins | 2nds | 3rds | 4ths | 5ths | 6ths |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
19 | 4 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 1 | 0 |
Form
BoyleSports Bob has been considered a dog with enormous potential for a while and he has started to show a glimpse of that throughout this competition. He opened his account in the first round being victorious in 28.87, which was followed by a runner-up finish in 29.11 and a third-place finish in 29.18. The dog won in the fourth round again, showcasing his speed breaking in 4.08 and stopping the clock in a red-hot 28.68.
Last Saturday Night the dog earned an all-important place in the final finishing in third 3 lengths back of winner De Lahdedah and 1 ⁄ 2 a length back of Whyaye Man.
Verdict
BoyleSports Bob is a dog with great ability and when on the bunny there are few if any who can match him on the clock. He has serious claims for Saturday, but I think he is too inconsistent in his early pace to win this final.
