In this post, we take a look at the 2027 Rugby World Cup odds and betting favourites.

The 2023 Rugby World Cup has reached its conclusion with South Africa coming out on top against New Zealand 11-12 to win their second successive Rugby World Cup and by extension their fourth title.

With the conclusion of the 2023 edition of the Rugby World Cup, the focus and attention has already started to shift towards the future.

The 2027 Rugby World Cup will be held in Australia from October 1st – November 13th in 2027. This next Rugby World Cup will feature 24 Nations, an increase from the 20 nations in recent tournaments.

Below you can find the 2027 Rugby World Cup winner betting odds along with a breakdown of the chances of each of the favourites.

2027 Rugby World Cup Favourites

New Zealand - 2027 Rugby World Cup Favourite

New Zealand are the 2027 Rugby World Cup favourites at odds of 5/2. Those odds imply that New Zealand has a 28.6% chance of winning the tournament in 2027.

The All Blacks suffered World Cup Final heartbreak against South Africa in 2023. They lost out by just a solitary point on a scoreline of 11-12 which denied them of their fourth-ever Rugby World Cup. Despite this loss, our odds-makers make New Zealand the early favourites to go one better in 2027 and win what would be their fourth Rugby World Cup.

Those short odds aren’t surprising when you consider they’re five-time finalists at the event (more than any other nation) and have the second-most successes after South Africa.

New Zealand have won the Rugby World Cup three times, in 1987, 2011 and 2015. That most recent victory in 2015 made them the first nation to win the event three times along with being the first country to retain the trophy.

Their historical win rate in test rugby union is 76% with more wins than losses against every opponent since their international debut in 1903. Furthermore, they have played test matches against 19 nations, of which 12 have never won a game against the All Blacks.

Their former dominance of the sport is less present today than ever before (as shown by South Africa’s two successes in a row) along with losing matches and series against Ireland for the first time in recent years.

New Zealand remains a terrific rugby nation though and despite their critics, they performed very well to reach the 2023 final. It would take a foolish person to rule them out of success in 2027 and they are worthy favourites to win the event.

South Africa

South Africa are the second favourites to win the 2027 Rugby World Cup at odds of 3/1. Those odds imply that South Africa have a 25% chance of winning the tournament in 2027.

The Springboks will come into the 2027 edition of the Rugby World Cup looking for their third successive win in the competition. They will have the chance to become the first team to ever win the tournament three times in a row.

That is following their Rugby World Cup wins in 2019, when they beat England 12-32 in the final, and in 2023, they beat New Zealand 11-12 in the final.

South Africa continued their tremendous strike rate in this tournament with their 2023 success, which made it four World Cup titles (more than any other side) which is a win rate of 50% from their eight tournament entries.

Aside from those wins, they’ve come third on two occasions (1999, 2015) and have been eliminated at the Quarter Final stage on only two occasions (2003, 2011).

One of the most revealing statistics for me when looking at their 2027 Rugby World Cup credentials is their ageing squad. The Springboks had the oldest squad at the 2023 World Cup with an average age of 30.4. This means they will need to replace plenty of talent in the coming years.

That being said, their record speaks for itself, and they will still be major players when the next edition of the event comes along.

France

Co-Third favourites for the 2027 Rugby World Cup are France at 5/1 in the betting odds. Those odds imply that the French have a 16.7% chance of lifting the Webb Ellis Cup in 2027.

France are one of only two nations, along with New Zealand, to be present at each edition of the Rugby World Cup.

Plenty was expected of them in 2023 given the fact that they were tournament hosts and had one of the best French squads we’ve ever seen. They didn’t disappoint in the pool stage with four wins from four games including the tournament curtain raiser against eventual finalists New Zealand.

However, such was the lopsided nature of the draw that France’s reward for winning their pool was a date with reigning Rugby World Cup Champions New Zealand.

In what many claim to be the greatest game of rugby ever, France were beaten by the Springboks 28-29. Yet more World Cup heartbreak for arguably the greatest rugby nation to have never won the Rugby World Cup.

Their best finish in the tournament is runner-up which they achieved in 1987, 1999 and 2011. They finished in third place in 1995, fourth place in 2003 and 2007 and were eliminated at the Quarter-Final stage in 1991, 2015, 2019 and 2023.

While it was a disappointment for the French on this occasion, France was the youngest of the top-eight ranked sides with an average age of 27.4. This indicates that this is an up and coming France team which could be even better next time around at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Under the tutelage of Head Coach Fabien Galthié, they’re the most prolific French team in history.

France are certainly a side to watch out for in 2027.

Ireland

Ireland are co-third favourites to win the 2027 Rugby World Cup at odds of 5/1. Those odds imply that Ireland have a 16.7% chance of winning a maiden Rugby World Cup in 2027.

Ireland came into the 2023 Rugby World Cup as the Number 1 ranked side in the world and expectations that were higher than ever. However, it was heartache for the Irish again with the team consigned to yet another Rugby World Cup Quarter-Final exit. This time at the hands of eventual finalists New Zealand on a scoreline of 24-28.

Ireland, remarkably from their nine appearances at the Rugby World Cup, have never been beyond the Quarter-Final stage. They have now been eliminated on nine occasions at the Quarter-Final stage and are the only traditional tier-one nation to have never reached a Rugby World Cup Semi-Final.

It’ll be another four years of grit, grind and determination before Ireland are afforded another chance to finally get beyond the Quarter-Finals.

There is cause for concern about this Ireland team going forward too as they had the third highest average age of all squads at the tournament with an average age of 29.4. That was only less than South Africa (30.4) and Samoa (29.5).

Ireland will need to replace plenty of their squad including legendary fly-half Johnny Sexton if they are to stand a chance of getting beyond the Quarter-Final, nevermind winning the tournament.

Australia

Next up in the betting for the 2027 Rugby World Cup is tournament hosts Australia who are a 7/1 chance to win the Rugby World Cup on home soil. Those odds imply that Australia have a 12.5% chance of winning the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Australian Rugby is not in a very good place right now. They came into the 2023 edition of the tournament in poor form but most still expected them to at least exit the pool.

However, following two defeats during the pool stage, 15-22 against Fiji and 40-6 against Wales, they didn’t even reach the Quarter-Final.

Australia have a proud history at the Rugby World Cup. They are one of only two nations to have won the event multiple times following their victories in 1991 and 1999. The Wallabies also finished runners-up in 2003 and 2015, third in 2011, fourth in 1987 and were eliminated at the Quarter-Final stage in 1995, 2007 and 2019.

Eddie Jones recently resigned from his role as Australia Head Coach following weeks of speculation about job offers from elsewhere and questions about where his loyalties lay. Australia had the youngest squad at the 2023 tournament (26.5) and it remains to be seen who will lead them into 2027.

As tournament hosts, and with the exciting prospect of the incoming Joseph Sua'ali'I, they should certainly mount a better challenge in 2027 so odds of 7/1 could prove shrewd in time.
