Clare v Cork Preview
Clare’s Form
Last season Clare had a poor league campaign finishing 4th from 6 teams in Division 1 Group A with a record of 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats from their 5 games. However, Clare found form for the Munster Championship where they topped the table with a record of 3 wins and 1 defeat to advance to the Munster Final.
Clare had a brilliant 2024 League Campaign finishing it unbeaten with 4 wins and 1 draw from their 5 games against Kilkenny, Cork, Wexford, Waterford and Offaly to top Division 1 Group A. In the League Semi-Final, they continued their flying form with a 1-24 to 2-13 victory over Tipperary and topped the lot when they overcame Kilkenny in the Division 1 Final 3-16 to 1-20.
They continued their brilliant form with a solid showing in the Munster Championship finishing the group stage with 3 wins and 1 defeat to finish runners-up to Limerick with only a points difference (+23) separating both sides. In the Munster Final, they lost to Limerick by 1-26 to 1-20 score which meant they dropped into the All-Ireland Quarter Final which proved to be light work for them with a 2-28 to 1-19 win against Wexford.
In their Semi-Final against Kilkenny, they overcame the odds where “The Cats” led by 5 points at half-time by a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-8 (and arguably could’ve led by more) to stage a brilliant comeback outscoring their opponents by 0-16 to 1-6 in the second half to land themselves a 0-24 to 2-16 victory and book their first All-Ireland Final appearance since when they were victorious over Cork in 2013
Cork’s Form
2023 started impressively for Cork when they topped Division 1 Group A with a record of 4 wins and 1 draw to finish 1 point ahead of runner-up in the league phase Clare. Cork would come unstuck in the League Semi-Final losing to Kilkenny by a 0-22 to 2-22 scoreline. However, despite the initial promise their season ended on a whimper following a 4th finish in Munster following a record of 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses.
Cork commenced the 2024 season in solid fashion but not quite the heights of the previous season when their record of 3 wins and 2 defeats meant they finished below Clare and Kilkenny in the league. In their Munster Campaign, a slow start (2 defeats) was followed by 2 wins against Clare and Tipperary which meant they secured their passage to the Preliminary Quarter-Final albeit by the skin of their teeth. In the Preliminary Quarter-Final, they showed their class making light work of Offaly in a 2-19 to 4-25 victory.
Cork booked their place in an All-Ireland Semi-Final for the first time since with a 0-21 to 0-26 win over Dublin at Semple Stadium. This was going to be their first appearance in a Semi-Final since their 1-32 to 1-37 victory over Kilkenny in 2021 after extra-time. That proved to be a good omen for their 2024 Semi-Final against competition favourites Limerick where they overcame the odds and practically every pundit opinion to claim a 0-29 to 1-28 win over their four-in-a-row All-Ireland Champions to book their place in the final against Clare a repeat of the 2013 All-Ireland Final.
Clare v Cork Rivalry
Both counties first played each other in Championship hurling in the 1899 Munster Semi-Final with Clare winning out by a 2-9 to 3-4 scoreline.
Since that game 61 Championships meetings have taken place between the sides with Clare winning out on 16 occasions, 5 draws taking place and Cork winning 40 times.
Their most high-profile meeting was the 2013 All-Ireland Final where the first game was drawn by a score of Cork 3-16 to 0-25 for Clare with Clare winning the reply by a scoreline of 5-16 to 3-16.
Their latest meeting was in the Munster Championship last April where Clare were victorious by a 3-26 to 2-24 score.

Key Players To Watch
Aidan McCarthy – Clare
The left corner forward who plays his club hurling with Inagh-Kilnamona has been Clare’s biggest threat in the Championship this season with a total of 1-46 and an average of 9 points across his 5 games making him the 5th highest scorer in the country. In their All-Ireland Semi-Final victory against Kilkenny, he was the leading marksman with a tally of 0-11 points to help Clare to a 2-point comeback win.

Patrick Horgan – Cork
Cork captain and talisman Patrick Horgan turned 36 last May and so this might be his last season to land that elusive All-Ireland success that his talents so richly deserve. He’s been Cork’s highest scorer in the Championship this season with a total of 5-62 and an average of 10 points across his 6 matches. He would need that 7-point total again on Sunday to go top-scorer of the Championship ahead of Lee Chin.
While his performance wasn’t the strongest in their victory against Limerick, that is the highest compliment you can give to the man after he still landed a respectable 5-points. He is a player for the big occasion and following a tally of 2-10 against Clare already in the year, he will be huge for Cork on Sunday.
Clare v Cork: Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Clare 1-20 Cork 2-19
Clare are back in an All-Ireland Final for the first time since their 2013 victory against Cork, the omens look good for another victory. Furthermore, despite having the better of their opponents on the scoresheet in 4 of their last 5 Championship matches, like the 2013 Final they will be considered underdogs by the bookies after Cork dumped reigning Champions Limerick out of the competition in the Semi-Final.
What a rollercoaster of a season it has been for supporters of “The Rebels” After 2 defeats in their opening games in the Munster Championship their All-Ireland aspirations were dangling by the finest of threads but after a thrilling 3-28 to 3-26 win over Limerick and a 1-21 to 4-30 demolition of Tipperary results went their way and they’ve gone from strength to strength since. Momentum could be very well with them after knocking Limerick in the Semi-Final, but there is also a fear that they have played their final before the final takes place.
Cork are worthy favourites following their win over Limerick but will have to guard against the complacency they came into the 2013 Final with. This will be an extremely close game and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another replay. But sticking my neck on the line I think Cork pull through with the narrowest of wins!
Best Bet: Cork Winning Margin 1-3 @ 10/3
