Cork v Waterford Preview

Cork’s Form

The Rebels left memories of last year’s All Ireland Final loss to Clare behind them when they roared into life in the 2025 National Hurling League a record of 4 wins, 1 draw and just 1 defeat meant they advanced to the final. In that final, they avenged their early league defeat to overcome Tipperary in a 0-23 to 3-24 triumph to win by 10 points.

They then went into the Munster Championship with momentum and played out a thrilling draw in their Round 1 game against Clare a repeat of last year's All Ireland finished in a 3-21 to 2-24 draw in Ennis. In their next game against Tipperary, they firmly set themselves as serious contenders for major prizes following a 4-27 to 0-24 win for a staggering 15-point victory.

However, talk of an elusive All-Ireland hit a dose of reality last weekend when Limerick won out 3-26 to 1-16 winners to show they haven’t gone away just yet. Cork have now gone from favourites for All-Ireland glory to the prospect of being eliminated if they lose this game.

For a county steeped in hurling folklore, it’s now 20 years since their last All-Ireland Hurling win when they beat Galway 1-21 to 1-16 in 2005.

Waterford’s Form

The Deise were dumped out of the All-Ireland series last season early following a record of 1 win, 1 draw and 2 defeats in the Munster Championship. However, following relegation in the National League last season too the dip in quality did them good and they won 5 and lost 1 of their Division 1B games to advance to the final where ran out 1-27 to 2-20 winners over Offaly.

Waterford opened their 2025 Munster Championship campaign with great promise following a 2-23 to 0-21 win over Clare in Round 2. That was followed by two defeats though first a 0-22 to 0-28 loss against Limerick and then a 1-30 to 1-21 defeat against Tipperary.

It’s do-or-die for Waterford come the weekend, win and they will go into the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals knocking out Cork in the process. If not their Championship dreams end for another season and their All-Ireland winless streak since their win in 1959 will extend further.

Key Players To Watch

Patrick Horgan - Cork

Cork captain and talisman Patrick Horgan turned 37 earlier this month and so this might be his last season to land that elusive All-Ireland success that his talents so richly deserve. He’s been Cork’s highest scorer in the Munster Championship this season with a total of 2-27 for an average of 11 points across his 3 matches.

While Cork disappointed in their latest showing in Limerick he still managed a tally of 1-9 for the day which was only bettered by Limerick attacker Aaron Gillanes's total of 2-7 on the day. Patrick Horgan remains the game-changer and talisman for Cork.

Patrick Horgan anytime goal - 5/4

Stephen Bennett - Waterford

The Full-Forward who plays his club GAA for Ballysaggart has been one of the few shining lights for the Deise so far in this Munster Championship. He took his 1-49 total from the league for an average of 10.4 points per game and has bettered it with his 3-26 from 3 matches in the Munster Championship an average of 11.67 points per game.

If Waterford are to stand any chance of staying in the All-Ireland series after next weekend he will need to replicate and maybe even do better than his 11.67 points per game tally.

Stephen Bennett anytime goal - 5/2

Cork v Waterford Prediction & Best Bet

Cork suffered a stark reminder not to count their All-Ireland’s before they win it following their comprehensive beating at the hands of Limerick last weekend.

This is a must-win for Waterford otherwise they will be eliminated from the All-Ireland series before they even got going.

The Rebels will be expected to be far too good for their opponents this weekend and as long they guard against complacency I expect them to get the job done.

Prediction: Cork 2-20  Waterford  1-17

Best Bet: Patrick Horgan RTÉ Man Of The Match – 7/1
