Coventry and Aston Villa will be hoping a change of competition will spark a change in fortune as the Premier League’s bottom two clubs clash in the Carabao Cup third round.
Frank Lampard’s runaway Championship winners are still pointless and goalless on their long-awaited return to the top flight, while Sunday’s 5-0 home drubbing by Brighton has left them rooted to the foot of the table.
Villa are not much better off, losing three of their opening four league games while being held 0-0 at promoted Hull in their other fixture. Coventry stormed to the Championship title last season to end their 25-year absence from the Premier League but have found life back amongst the elite far from comfortable, albeit from a testing run of fixtures. They were beaten by champions Arsenal (3-0), Hull (1-0) and Manchester City (1-0) before suffering that five-goal mauling by Brighton.

A miserable few months for Villa continued at the weekend as they were beaten at home by Nottingham Forest following an 88th-minute Igor Jesus winner.
