Celtic will look to transfer their improved domestic form to the Europa League on Thursday when they host fellow strugglers Celta Vigo. The Hoops have won both their Scottish Premiership matches since the international break, including a 7-1 mauling of Hearts on Sunday.
That has left them four points clear at the top of the table but it is a very different story in Europe. Having been knocked out of the Champions League play-offs in ignominious fashion by Austrian side LASK, Martin O’Neill’s men have not found the Europa League any more comfortable, losing both matches to date, and are 33rd in the 36-team standings.
But Spanish side Celta are not much better off. They too are still searching for their first points, although they can consider themselves unfortunate not to have got anything from games against Omonia Nicosia and Juventus. Celta Vigo Form Guide
Celta have only won two of their 11 matches this term, losing four including both Europa League outings, but things could easily have been very different for Claudio Giráldez’s side. In Europe, they went down to an 88th-minute winner in Nicosia before conceding a stoppage-time Randal Kolo Muani decider in last week’s 2-1 home loss to Juventus, having led at half-time.
Domestically, they surrendered another half-time lead to lose 2-1 to Osasuna, while they dropped two more points after seeing Málaga notch a late leveller. The good news for the Pontevedra-based club is that things look to be on the up, beating Racing 5-0 and Alavés 2-1 in their last two home league games to move up to eighth in the table.
