With Michael Carrick’s Old Trafford reign on the rocks, we’re taking a look at the next permanent Manchester United manager odds to see who might replace him.
After following up a calamitous Champions League drubbing at Como with another humiliating home loss to Bournemouth , the Red Devils are 16th in the Premier League and just one point above the relegation zone.
Add on the public displays of dressing room unrest made by Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes and it is easy to see why bookmakers are already betting on Carrick’s successor, with these contenders rated the top targets:

Eddie Howe
EDDIE HOWE @ 4/5
The 48-year-old is an obvious favourite due to his past connections with United director of football Jason Wilcox during a successful five-year stint at Newcastle . ‘ Steady Eddie ’ also impressed in a lengthy second spell as Bournemouth boss, notably earning plenty of plaudits for bringing through young players, which should endear him to the Old Trafford faithful.
Julian Nagelsmann
JULIAN NAGELSMANN @ 7/4
The 39-year-old German is reportedly the preferred choice of compatriot Christopher Vivell , United’s current director of recruitment and formerly a technical director at RB Leipzig while Nagelsmann was head coach there.
After reaching the Champions League semi-finals with that club, Nagelsmann won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich before spending three years in charge of the national team, so his CV is rock-solid - and Red Devils skipper Fernandes would no doubt be a fan of his ‘gegenpressing’ tactics.
Antonio Conte
ANTONIO CONTE @ 5/1
Conte became a Juventus legend during 13 seasons with The Old Lady as a player but in terms of his managerial career, it tends to be a case of clubs bringing him in for a good time, rather than a long time.
Even so, it is hard to argue with the 57-year-old’s success rate, having won five Serie A titles during spells with Juve , Inter Milan and most recently Napoli , just two seasons ago, as well as enjoying a Premier League triumph at Chelsea .
Whether United’s beleaguered board would want to engage with such a fiery character is open to question, but Conte’s key assets are getting his teams to play with a high work-rate and inspiring players to fight for him, qualities which the Red Devils are in desperate need of.
Unai Emery
UNAI EMERY @ 8/1
After successful stints with Sevilla and PSG , the Spaniard had an underwhelming spell in charge of Arsenal but has rebuilt his reputation at Villarreal and Aston Villa . Past evidence suggests he usually stays loyal to clubs during the season, though.
Fabian Hurzeler
FABIAN HURZELER @ 10/1
Two eighth-place finishes with Brighton and a flying start to the current season have made the 33-year-old a hot property who looks destined to go on to bigger things at some stage, but this summer’s contract extension until 2029 means it would cost a lot of money to prize him away from the Seagulls at this point.
