A record nine Premier League clubs will start out with new head coaches this term and past history suggests we won’t have to wait long for the managerial merry-go-round to start up again.
Two changes had been made by the end of September last season, so we’re taking a look at the favourites in the current Premier League sack race odds to see who might be the next boss to leave their post.
Sergej Jakirovic
SERGEJ JAKIROVIC (HULL) @ 5/2
The Bosnian led the Tigers to a surprise promotion via the play-offs but life is expected to get a lot harder at this level, especially as four of their first five Premier League fixtures are against Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle .
Ambitious owner Acun Ilicali has vowed to stand by Jakirovic even if early results go against Hull , but that is often easier said than done.
Frank Lampard
FRANK LAMPARD (COVENTRY) @ 7/2
Following the jubilation of ending a quarter-of-a-century exile from the top flight, the stark reality of being back among England’s elite will soon bite – with an opening trip to champions Arsenal and then also an early away day at Manchester City . Lampard has been here before and knows the score, only lasting until January during stints with Chelsea and Everton .
Gary O'Neil
GARY O’NEIL (IPSWICH) @ 9/2
O’Neil has been on the other end of an early exit, taking charge of Bournemouth at the end of August 2022 following the dismissal of Scott Parker . He only joined Ipswich after Kieran McKenna stepped away having guided the Suffolk club back up and so needs to hit the ground running to get the fans on his side.
Oliver Glasner
OLIVER GLASNER (NOTTINGHAM FOREST) @ 10/1
Glasner built up a good reputation at Eintracht Frankfurt before leading Crystal Palace to FA Cup and Europa Conference League glory and looks an excellent capture for Forest . However, City Ground owner Evangelos Marinakis isn’t exactly known for his patience if things start badly, with Nuno Espirito Santo being the first Premier League boss axed last term and later followed out of the exit door by Ange Postecoglou, Sean Dyche and Vitor Pereira.
Alvaro Arbeloa
ALVARO ARBELOA (FULHAM) @ 10/1
The Spaniard has a tough act to follow after Marco Silva opted not to extend his five-season stay at Craven Cottage and is a relative novice at this game, with only a short and turbulent stint in charge of Real Madrid behind him.
Matthias Jaissle
MATTHIAS JAISSLE (NEWCASTLE) @ 10/1
Following the departure of Eddie Howe and key players such as Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali , some will fear Jaissle has taken over a sinking ship, but the 38-year-old German had a great record at Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli.
