McIlroy back in action as Race to Dubai battle hots up

Rory McIlroy will seek to reclaim a top-two place in the Race to Dubai standings when he returns to action at the second edition of the DP World India Championship this week. McIlroy has been the main challenger to long-time leader Patrick Reed as he chases a fifth successive Race to Dubai title in 2026, but the Northern Irishman has now seen in-form Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra climb above him.

Despite battling a fractured toe, Chacarra finished joint runner-up on home soil at the Open de Espana on Sunday, a shot behind champion Grant Forrest of Scotland . That was Chacarra’s third top-four finish in his last five events as he replaced McIlroy in second spot in the Race to Dubai rankings, albeit having played almost three times as many DP World Tour tournaments as the world number two this year.

With 835.00 points available to the winner in New Delhi , McIlroy and Chacarra are two of four players who could top the standings come Sunday night, along with Reed and fourth-placed Casey Jarvis . Of that quartet, only Chacarra and South Africa's Jarvis are scheduled to take part in the final regular-season event at the Genesis Championship , so major winners McIlroy and Reed will be looking to make their mark this weekend ahead of the play-offs.

American Reed , who has topped the rankings since February, is 18/1 to take the honours on Sunday and will expect to be in contention, as will Chacarra (12/1) and Jarvis (20/1). However, it is Ryder Cup stars McIlroy , in his first appearance since finishing second at the BMW PGA Championship almost a month ago, and Tommy Fleetwood who are favourites to finish top of the pile.

Fleetwood backed to double up in India

McIlroy , who can be backed @ 13/2, had to settle for a share of 26th place at the inaugural DP World India Championship 12 months ago in what was his first playing appearance in India . His 11-under-par 277 at Delhi Golf Club was solid enough but was 11 shots adrift of Fleetwood , who overhauled Japan's Keita Nakajima on the final day to claim his eighth DP World Tour title.

Olympic silver medallist Fleetwood has seen his odds to successfully defend his crown cut to 13/2 and if he can recapture the form that brought a fourth-placed finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship earlier this month, then the Englishman could be hard to beat.

Of the other potential contenders, Shane Lowry is third favourite at 11/1, with reigning PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai @ 12/1 alongside Chacarra . Lowry was in contention for much of the 2025 edition, including topping the leaderboard after an opening-day 64, before seeing his challenge fade on the final day as he finished joint third.

The Irishman is also in decent form heading back to India , finishing 13th ( Madrid ) and 21st ( BMW PGA ) since winning the Irish Open a month ago, while Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre (14/1) has three top-10 in his last five outings. Rai , meanwhile, was joint runner-up alongside McIlroy at Wentworth in his most recent tournament.
