Gotterup aiming to capitalise on absence of top stars

Chris Gotterup may not get a better chance to snap up a third title of 2026 as the PGA Tour’s big guns sit out the John Deere Classic this week. Gotterup, 26, enjoyed a flying start to the season and doubled his career trophy haul with victories at the Sony Open and Phoenix Open in his first four tournaments.

The world number 13 has gone off the boil since then, recording just two top-10 finishes at the Houston Open and PGA Championship , but he has made the cut in his last 11 events and finished under par in all but three of them.

Gotterup’s big advantage is the fact he is the only member of the world’s top 17 who is teeing up at TPC Deere Run as the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick take a break from competition ahead of the Scottish Open and Open .

Gotterup, who finished joint fourth on his debut in Silvis, Illinois in 2022, is 12/1 and our tip for victory this weekend, with Ben Griffin favourite at 11/1.

Griffin favourite to end title wait

The Contenders

Griffin won three PGA titles during his breakthrough year in 2025 but is yet to add to his collection in 2026, although he has finished in the top three twice. He was also joint 17th at the US Open and tied for 10th at the Travelers last time out, where he recorded four rounds in the 60s to finish 16 under par.

Griffin also finished T5 at the John Deere Classic in 2024 and his excellent short game should stand him in good stead at a course where low scoring has been a staple of past tournaments. The average winning score over the last decade in this event has been 21 under par, with last year’s winner Brian Campbell finishing 18 under before defeating Emiliano Grillo in a play-off.

Campbell is seeking to become the first player since Steve Stricker in 2011 to defend his title but the 33-year-old has had a miserable year to date, missing the cut in nine tournaments, and he is 175/1 outsider this week.

Koivun makes pro debut

Keith Mitchell is 16/1, the same odds as 21-year-old rising star Koivun, who finished T11 at the 2025 John Deere Classic on his debut as a college junior, while he was also joint 23rd at the recent US Open at Shinnecock Hills in his last outing as an amateur. Koivun is 13/5 for a top 10 finish, which could appeal to punters.

Keegan Bradley is 18/1 while fellow major winner Jordan Spieth is 25/1 as he looks to recapture past glories at one of his most successful destinations. Spieth won 13 titles during a glittering period between 2013 and 2022, two of which came at the John Deere Classic.

However, there is little to indicate the 32-year-old Texan will make it a hat-trick of wins here this week. He is without a PGA title in four years and hasn’t recorded a single top-10 finish in 2026.
