The Tour Championship is the final event of the three-tournament FedExCup play-offs and features the top 30 players in the 2026 points standings. Doubts Surround Top Two
Stars converge for play-off finale
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy lead an all-star cast as the FedExCup play-offs conclude with the prestigious Tour Championship , but neither of the former winners looks in tip-top condition heading to Atlanta . The duo are among the top 30 players in the 2026 FedExCup standings who are taking part at East Lake Golf Club this week for the chance to win the biggest payday of the PGA Tour season.
American Scheffler tops the points standings for the fifth successive year and is 18/5 outright favourite to walk off with the trophy and USD 10million prize, but several factors may count against the 2024 champion in Georgia .
Primarily it is the world number one’s health. He revealed after the BMW Championship on Sunday he had been struck down by hand, foot and mouth disease after winning the FedEx St Jude Championship the previous weekend. Scheffler still managed to finish joint 12th at the BMW but was unable to replicate his stunning St Jude form, where he won by eight strokes to claim his first tournament victory since January.
He said: “If I was smarter, maybe I would have pulled out (of BMW), but I was playing so good I felt like I could knock it out quickly and just get through the first couple rounds and I would have a chance. I’m proud of how I fought. Feel like I’m starting to heel up.”

The Contenders
McIlroy chasing history
The other main factor facing Scheffler is his competition at East Lake , where every single member of the elite field will feel they have a chance of success. Scheffler will also not have the benefit of starting the tournament on 10 under par, which until 2025 was the reward given to the FedExCup points leader going into the Tour Championship.
That means all 30 players start with a clean slate, and McIlroy is among those hoping to take advantage as he chases an unprecedented fourth FedExCup crown. The six-time major winner bounced back from a miserable showing at the St Jude Championship , where he was tied for 66th, by finishing third at the BMW , four shots behind winner Wyndham Clark.
McIlroy still does not feel he is firing on all cylinders, though, and said: “Encouraged with how I played compared to what it was last week, and certainly something to build on going into East Lake. I'm still not in a spot where I'm super happy with where my game is or where my swing is, so I just have to keep working.
“But it's nice to know even when I'm not super happy with everything I can still piece it together and give myself a chance to win tournaments.“
Clark and Fitzpatrick looking to cap memorable years
McIlroy is 17/2 second favourite for victory, but with neither of the world’s top two seemingly in peak condition, the best candidates for victory may come from elsewhere. Xander Schauffele is 10/1 and Ludvig Aberg 16/1, although neither of them have claimed a PGA victory yet in 2026.
Instead, we fancy the winner this week to come from the six-strong group of players at 16/1 and 18/1 - Clark, Patrick Cantlay, Sam Burns, Cameron Young, Collin Morikawa and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Clark’s BMW success was his third title of the year following the US Open and CJ Cup Byron Nelson and saw him climb to third in the FedExCup standings, behind Scheffler and Fitzpatrick, and can be backed at 16/1.
Englishman Fitzpatrick has also won three tournaments, as well as finishing runner-up twice, in what has been the most successful season of his career but the 2022 US Open champion won't want to settle for that. He is 18/1 outright but 3/1 for a top-five place could be a more sensible option.
Young is fourth in the FedExCup standings, while Morikawa and Burns are seventh and eighth respectively. Cantlay climbed from 43rd to 19th in the standings after a second-placed finish, three shots behind Clark, in Missouri last week. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood is 18/1 to become the first back-to-back winner of the Tour Championship.
