2024 Boyle Sports Irish Greyhound Derby 2
Bill Gaine · Writer

The BOYLE Sports  Irish Greyhound Derby first round continues on Saturday, August 8th, with 72 more dogs beginning their journey to fight it out to win one of the sport's biggest prizes.

Here we preview each heat from Night 2 of Round 1 Heats 13-24

Heat 13

Heat 13:

(1)   Ballymac Scheff -  9/2

(2)   Bouncing Monarch – 3/10

(3)   Goldmine Diamond – 50/1

(4)   Newinn Spot – 4/1

(5)   Cracking  Cody – 25/1

(6)   Leameneigh Godes – 25/1

The opening heat of the second night of the first round looks to be all about outright market leader Bouncing Monarch for trainer Michael J O’Donovan .

For those backing it’ll likely be for who lands second place and if I were picking I’d go with the early paced Newinn Spot for Graham Holland.

Heat 14

Heat 14:

(1)   Coloursaregreen -  5/4

(2)   Gaytime Clyde – 5/2

(3)   The Other Mel– 6/1

(4)   Ballyhooly Bruno – 8/1

(5)   Ardfert Sam – 8/1

(6)   Ballymac Altobel– 6/1

Coloursaregreen, trained by Paul Hennessy, heads the market in this one, but I think he could be worth challenging, and though veteran Ballyhooly Bruno for Tom O’Neill hasn’t been at his best recently, he retains gears and has winning form around Shelbourne Park.

Heat 15

Heat 15:

(1)   Avenue Queen -  3/1

(2)   Singalong Cherry – 5/1

(3)   Unassuming– 9/4

(4)   Microchip– 12/1

(5)   Mill Willow– 5/2

(6)   Kilcolgan Eddie– 6/1

The lightly raced bitch Unassuming for Brendan Matthews looks to be the most likely scorer in Heat 15 on the back of her recent 28.29 trial for the 525. But I think the lightly raced Mill Willow for Barry Clancy also has a great deal of appeal.

Heat 16

Heat 16:

(1)   Slippery Felix -  9/4

(2)   Miami Hans – 10/3

(3)   Hunters Pilot– 14/1

(4)   Coolemount Fame– 4/1

(5)   Harverd Square– 5/1

(6)   Priceless Romeo– 3/1

Slippery Felix comes into this heat on the back of a 27.99 run for the 525-yard trip, and if he can even moderately stay the extra 25 yards, he looks to be excellent value in the betting market.

Heat 17

Heat 17:

(1)   Bills Harbour -  9/2

(2)   Droichead Nua – 8/1

(3)   Sober Barry – 4/1

(4)   Ballymac Siun– 6/1

(5)   Callaway Five– 8/1

(6)   Kapuka Coley– EVS

Though Kapuka Coley is favourite for Karol Ramsbottom.

I like the look of his ultra-consistent kennel companion Sober Barry, who was unlikely to find trouble last time out but should be refreshed following a month's break .

Heat 18

Heat 18:

(1)   Miami Hyland -  8/1

(2)   Callaway Knegare – 6/1

(3)   Ballymac Hitman – 5/1

(4)   Lone Calling – 12/1

(5)   Lemon Hidalgo– 16/1

(6)   Ballymac Deniro –  4/9

Serial scorer Callaway Knegare, trained by Owen McKenna, may be approaching his fourth birthday, but he still retains plenty of pace; he faces a big challenge against upstart Ballymac Deniro for Liam Dowling, who is one of the outright market leaders.

I think there’s place value in the early paced Lone Calling for Michael J O’Donovan.

Heat 19

Heat 19:

(1)   Metal King -  2/1

(2)   Shotgun Dez–  5/2

(3)   Sure Exile –  8/1

(4)   Ryee – 10/1

(5)   Sawdust Barry–  6/1

(6)   Glengar Phantom –  5/2

Heat 19 looks to be one of the most open heats when it comes to the betting market, which is no surprise given they’re relatively lightly raced 2024 whelps which should all have improvement in their clocks.

Shotgun Dez would be my pick if I had to pick one.

Heat 20

Heat 20:

(1)   Kerogue Jet -  33/1

(2)   Jaykay Fly- 8/11

(3)   A Chairda  –  12/1

(4)   Ballymac Charbel – 2/1

(5)   Skywalker Bruno – 4/1

(6)   Lansky– 33/1

Jaykay Fly, trained by Paul Hennessy, has clocked 29.40 for the 550, and if he can replicate that again, he will go quite close to winning this one.

On current odds, I still think there’s value in betting on him.

Heat 21

Heat 21:

(1)   Grouchos Chief- 2/1

(2)   Hackney Dancer  –  7/2

(3)   Gallant Captain – 14/1

(4)   Crossfield Matt –  6/1

(5)   Hackney Corner  –  6/5

(6)   El Prez George – 40/1

Hackney Corner leads the market for trainer Michael J O’Donovan , but I think there’s value in challenging him.

Crossfield Matt for Brendan O’Shea could go close if he can show his early pace.

Heat 22

Heat 22:

(1)   Carrigeen Whit -  7/1

(2)   Berlin Trilogy  –  3/1

(3)   Waitingforastar–  EVS

(4)   Gaytime Joachim  – 8/1

(5)   Slippery Brian –  9/2

(6)   Dear Sir –  16/1

Heat 22 looks to be another open affair with Waitingforastar the current market leader for Patrick Guilfoyle . I think there’s very little between any of the dogs in this race.

Gaytime Joachim looks to have a chance with his early pace though.

Heat 23

Heat 23:

(1)   Sleight Of Hand -  7/2

(2)   Wi Can James–  8/11

(3)   The Other Eimear–  6/1

(4)   Droopys Winsome – 12/1

(5)   Text Amiright–  10/1

(6)   Supa Mac – 8/1

Wi Can James has serious gears for trainer Patrick Guilfoyle and looks to be one of the leading fancies to at least go far in this competition, and I fancy him for this heat too.

If looking to take him on. Sleight Of Hand from Laurence Jones looks to be a capable challenger.

Heat 24

Heat 24

(1)   Ballymac Cmax -  14/1

(2)   Lennies Eddie –  13/8

(3)   Amidus Hulk–  8/1

(4)   Ballymac Setanta – 11/10

(5)   Grangeview Rocko – 33/1

(6)   Faypoint Ranger – 6/1

The final heat of the first round pits two of the market fancies against one another: Lennies Eddie for Paul Hennessy and Ballymac Setanta for Liam Dowling.

I’d fancy the latter to get the job done in this one.
