With BOYLE Sports sponsoring the opening three races of The Weekender card, the pressure is on us to point punters in the right direction with our Galway Festival tips for Saturday.
A big crowd will be present at the Ballybrit venue as the August Bank Holiday kicks in and these are our selections for all eight contests.
14:02 Tip
14:02 BOYLE SPORTS BEST ODDS GUARANTEED MAIDEN HURDLE – COLUMBUS
Paul Townend has picked this former Group Three winner on the Flat in France from two Willie Mullins runners and it is easy to see why.
Columbus was a solid second to Midnight Jet on his jumping bow at Killarney and that victor followed up in fine style at this festival on Thursday.
14:37 Tip
14:37 BOYLE SPORTS GALWAY TRIBES HANDICAP HURDLE – PAUL’S DREAM
The handicapper has had a say since her wins at Ballinrobe and Kilbeggan but such was the manner of those decisive victories that she may still have enough in hand to stay one step ahead.
15:12 Tip
15:12 BOYLE SPORTS HANDICAP HURDLE – SIR GALAHAD
A prize fund of €110,000 has attracted all of Ireland’s top jumping yards but we feel British raider Olly Murphy may have the edge in this ultra-competitive contest.
Sir Galahad scored four times as a novice last summer and again showed his liking for good ground when bolting up by 11 lengths at Uttoxeter in May, with the way he powered further and further clear on the run-in suggesting this step up in trip will suit.
15:52 Tip
15:52 – FLEUR DINO
Mullins again has two strong entries in this mares’ bumper and while Glens Sonata is of interest being from the family of Glens Melody , it is hard to ignore the fact that the trainer’s son Patrick has plumped for this half-sister to four winners, including Grade One scorer Fleur In The Park.
16:27 Tip
16:27 – VICTORY SPEECH
Aidan O’Brien has been cleaning up at Glorious Goodwood this week and this Wootton Bassett colt is taken to go one better than his debut second at the Curragh , where he was doing his best work at the business end and so should appreciate having an extra furlong to travel.
17:00 Tip
17:00 – GLIONDAR
Joseph O’Brien has enjoyed success both in Sussex and Ballybrit over the past few days and can maintain the momentum with this three-year-old, who made a promising racecourse bow at the Curragh when going down by just a neck to subsequent Leopardstown scorer Loughrea .
17:35 Tip
17:35 – SAN AER
We were on Ross O’Sullivan’s gelding at good odds when he just failed to land a gamble here on Tuesday, finishing second of 17 after being reeled in late on, so the hope is that he can recover those losses and more before taking a hit from the handicapper.
18:05 Tip
18:05 – THATWILLDOSO
Only got up by a short-head at Roscommon last time out but travelled sweetly throughout that contest and is taken to repeat the same double she achieved 12 months ago under Rory Cleary by following up in the McDonogh Capital Investments handicap.
