Day three of the July Festival at headquarters is headlined by Group One action with the July Cup , while the John Smith’s Cup on the Knavesmire is always one of the most competitive handicaps of the season.

William Haggas’ five-year-old was runner-up to Notable Speech in the BOYLE Sports Lockinge and again had to settle for second behind Ten Bob Tony in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot , but having his sights slightly lowered for the Group Two Summer Mile Stakes can lead to a deserved success.

15:12 YORK – AMERICAN AFFAIR @ 6/1
The six-year-old never ran his race when trying to repeat last year’s King Charles III Stakes success at Royal Ascot and trailed home last of the 26 runners, but a line can be drawn through that run and the Listed-class City Walls Stakes will hopefully prove more to his liking.
American Affair had previously performed with credit when second to Night Raider in the Temple Stakes at Haydock and a return to the Knavesmire , where he came out on top in a valuable handicap last summer, can help him get back on track.

15:25 NEWMARKET – GREAT ACCLAIM @ 13/2
Since being dropped back to seven furlongs after struggling in the Lincoln , the five-year-old was a close third in a valuable Haydock handicap and was then a length second behind The Wizard Of Eye in the Victoria Cup at Ascot .
A fine third of 28 in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at the Royal meeting f ollowed last time out and six-time scorer Great Acclaim can get back on the winning trail in the Bunbury Cup.
15:45 York Tip
15:45 YORK – WARRANT HOLDER @ 4/1
The Frankel gelding was successful in a handicap on the Knavesmire in May before being stepped up in distance at Royal Ascot in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes.
Warrant Holder was beaten into second by Opportunity that day but back to 10 furlongs here, he can get back in the winner’s enclosure for the King and Queen in the John Smith’s Cup .

16:00 NEWMARKET – ABRAHAM LINCOLN @ 4/5
The Wootton Bassett colt made a winning start at the Curragh last month, running on well to get the better of stablemate Haffner by a length and three-quarters.
Described afterwards as “probably classy” by Aidan O’Brien , he can maintain his unbeaten record in the Group Two Superlative Stakes , which went to Ballydoyle star City Of Troy three years ago.

16:35 NEWMARKET – VENETIAN SUN (NAP) @ 11/4
Karl Burke’s filly has already amassed in excess of £800,000 in prize-money and can add another big pot to her collection in the July Cup . Venetian Sun failed to stay on her seasonal reappearance in the 1000 Guineas , but she impressed over six furlongs next time out in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock , coming home three lengths clear of Division .
She was made to work harder when beating Spicy Marg by a head in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, albeit in the final reckoning she might have been a cosy winner at the line. And while this is Venetian Sun’s toughest task to date taking on her elders, she is unbeaten at sprint trips and it will take a good performance to stop her.
