Day three of York’s Ebor Festival sees the sprinters take centre stage, with the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes over five furlongs the feature race. The prestigious Gimcrack Stakes for juveniles provides strong support, along with another Group Two contest in the Lonsdale Cup for stayers.

William Haggas loves having winners at York , as he has already shown once again this week, and his three-year-old returns to the Knavesmire after following up a fair fourth here in June with an excellent second of 19 at Glorious Goodwood.

With no Trawlerman or Scandinavia to worry about, George Scott’s li keable gelding surely has a golden chance of Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup glory. A line can be put firmly though his Gold Cup run, as Caballo De Mar raced with too much exuberance before dropping away and being virtually pulled up, with the vet reporting him to be showing signs of heat stress in the aftermath.
Last year’s Prix du Cadran victor had picked up his second ParisLongchamp Group One in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier prior to that blip at the Royal meeting and trainer Scott wisely resisted all temptation to run him anywhere else after Ascot to wait for this.

The Michael Dods -trained two-year-old can come through his biggest test yet to land the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. Already gelded, the son of Bayside Boy is unbeaten in three starts so far and travelled down to Newbury last time to win a good novice affair, one that last year produced the Middle Park winner in Wise Approach.
This season’s renewal looks like it was right up to standard too, with runner-up Nabati winning at Newmarket’s July meeting and third home Agamemnon – who reopposes – only finding one too good in a Group Three in France .

American trainer Wesley Ward is taken to claim a coveted first success in the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes. The popular Keeneland handler has come close before with Acapulco and Lady Aurelia , as well as having other disappointments, namely Golden Pal , but now tries with Bacio, a horse who blitzed the opposition in the Palace of Holyroodhouse at Royal Ascot.
Those picking against him will say that was only a handicap, but while that is true, it was run in a faster time than the Group One King Charles III Stakes over the same trip earlier in the week. Bacio fairly scorched through the final furlong and as long as conditions underfoot are not too testing following this week’s rain, jockey Juan Hernandez can enjoy a landmark day in the saddle.

Tony Martin’s Irish raider ran well in the Northumberland Plate from a wide draw and now has the assistance of hold-up specialist Jamie Spencer , so each-way punters will be hoping for some late gains, as was the case when he was an unlucky fourth here 12 months ago.
