Next Republic of Ireland Manager Favourite – Willy Sagnol
The long-running saga over who will be appointed permanent manager of Republic of Ireland is being backed to reach a conclusion in the near future with Willy Sagnol now 2/1 favourite with BoyleSports for the role.
The protracted search for a permanent successor to Stephen Kenny has seen several candidates featuring at one stage as bookies favourites, including interim boss John O'Shea, Lee Carsley, Neil Lennon, Chris Coleman and Gus Poyet.
However Sagnol is now in pole position according to the odds as he prepares to lead Georgia into a crucial Euro 2024 group clash with Portugal on Wednesday. Defeat would condemn Georgia to a group stage exit and Sagnol is believed to be a top target for the FAI, even though the former French international brushed off pre-tournament speculation that he would take the Irish job after Georgia’s adventure in Germany came to an end.
The ‘Ship Has Sailed’ For Roy Keane?
Ex-captain Roy Keane added intrigue to the search this week when he revealed that he has held talks over the vacancy, admitting the job would tempt him back into management.
Keane told his fellow pundits on The Overlap that he believes “that ship has sailed” and odds of 33/1 suggest an unlikely appointment for the former Manchester United midfielder. Keane’s former teammate John O’Shea is 7/2 second favourite to be handed the role on a permanent basis, with Robbie Keane also in contention at 4/1.
New Name Enters The Fray
There is also a new name in the frame this week, with Herve Renard introduced to the race at 16/1 after confirming he will leave his position as France Women’s boss after the Olympics.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:
“Clues are still few and far between, but Willy Sagnol has emerged as the top pick with punters and many Irish fans will have eyes on Georgia’s fate at the Euros in the belief this saga could finally be coming to an end.”
