Portugal had a long road to get to this World Cup. They were poor in qualifying at times as Serbia finished ahead of them for the automatic qualification spot in their qualifying group. This meant that they needed to win two playoff fixtures to book their spot in Qatar. They beat both Turkey and then North Macedonia in the World Cup playoffs to get here.
This team’s most recent form has been good with four wins in their last six games. They have a +12 goal difference over these six games which adds up to an average winning margin of two goals per game.
Ghana qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after a strong campaign in Africa’s qualifiers. They beat South Africa, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe to earn a playoff spot against rivals Nigeria. In that playoff fixture they claimed a narrow victory via away goals.
Recent performances from Ghana have been impressive with five wins and only one loss, to Brazil, in their last six matches. In fact, the only match they conceded a goal in was against the Brazilians so this team have been very strong defensively of late.
Cristiano Ronaldo is of course the star man for the Portuguese, and he will occupy a central striker position up front. At club level Ronaldo is notoriously out of form but for his country he is still scoring at a prolific rate.
Ronaldo will be joined in the attack by clubmate (for now) Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva who plays his football for rivals Man City. Fernandes and Silva are both great playmakers in the midfield who can find a pass to unlock defences.
This team will likely set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation which will give them two deep lying midfielders to protect the back four. You might be familiar with Tariq Lamptey of Brighton who is set to feature for the west African nation after switching his football nationality from England to Ghana.
While Ghana have defended well against weaker teams in recent games this Portugal attack will be a massive step up for them. I would expect Portugal to be able to find the net here on a couple of occasions.
Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace in the Premier League is this team’s best player going forward. Thomas Partey of Arsenal will play a deeper midfield role but when Ghana are in possession he will often take on the responsibility of orchestrating the attack.
Overall, this team might struggle to create chances against Portugal in this game with a lack of attacking talent and form working against them.
Portugal will likely play a 4-3-3 formation with Ruben Neves playing just in front of the back four to provide cover in the centre of the pitch.
With Joao Cancelo, Nuno Mendes and Ruben Dias among the Portuguese defenders it is hard to see many teams creating chances against Portugal so this Ghana attack shouldn’t pose a massive threat in this game.
I would also have a look at Portugal to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 in the correct score groups betting at odds of 7/5.
Bruno Fernandes has been in great goal scoring form of late with three goals in his last three appearances for Portugal. 13/2 on Fernandes to score the first goal is worth a look if you want bigger odds than Ronaldo’s price of 7/2.

The Form - Portugal vs Ghana Prediction
Portugal’s Form
Portugal come into this Qatar World Cup at 14/1 in the betting to win the tournament. In Group H they are odds-on favourites at 4/6 ahead of rivals Uruguay.Portugal had a long road to get to this World Cup.
Ghana’s Form
Ghana come into this tournament as massive outsiders to win the tournament at odds of 250/1. In Group H they are third favourites in the betting at 10/1.Ghana qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after a strong campaign in Africa’s qualifiers.
How The Two Teams Match Up
Portugal’s Attack
On paper Portugal have one of the best attacks in the competition. Over their last three games they have scored eight goals which is just under three goals per game.Cristiano Ronaldo is of course the star man for the Portuguese, and he will occupy a central striker position up front.
Ghana’s Defence
Ghana have been very secure at the back in recent international matches. In their last six games they have only conceded three goals which works out to an average of only 0.5 goals conceded per game.
Ghana’s Attack
In attack Ghana haven’t been lighting it up in their preparations for this World Cup. They are averaging a little under two goals per game over the last six games.Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace in the Premier League is this team’s best player going forward. Thomas Partey of Arsenal will play a deeper midfield role but when Ghana are in possession he will often take on the responsibility of orchestrating the attack.
Overall, this team might struggle to create chances against Portugal in this game with a lack of attacking talent and form working against them.
Portugal's Defence
Despite the array of attacking talent on this Portuguese team they are even better in defence. This could be the best defence at this World Cup.Portugal will likely play a 4-3-3 formation with Ruben Neves playing just in front of the back four to provide cover in the centre of the pitch.
With Joao Cancelo, Nuno Mendes and Ruben Dias among the Portuguese defenders it is hard to see many teams creating chances against Portugal so this Ghana attack shouldn’t pose a massive threat in this game.
Portugal vs Ghana Prediction and Best Bet
Portugal look to be the much better team than Ghana in both attack and defence so the best bet here has to be Portugal to win both halves boosted to 5/2 from 9/4.I would also have a look at Portugal to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 in the correct score groups betting at odds of 7/5.
Portugal vs Ghana Goalscorer Betting Odds
I expect Cristiano Ronaldo to be looking to prove a point in this game amid all the controversy that is surrounding him after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. Ronaldo to score first at 7/2 looks appealing here.Bruno Fernandes has been in great goal scoring form of late with three goals in his last three appearances for Portugal. 13/2 on Fernandes to score the first goal is worth a look if you want bigger odds than Ronaldo’s price of 7/2.
