Scotland v England Preview

Scotland Form

Form Coming into the 2024 Six Nations

Scotland entered the RWC following a strong 3rd-place finish in the 2023 Six Nations. However, they were disappointingly dumped out of the tournament at the Pool Stage coming third after defeats from Ireland and South Africa.

2024 Six Nations

Scotland opened their Six Nations campaign with a 26-27 victory against Wales. However, it was a game of two halves with Scotland not scoring past the 42nd minute before they just about held on following a late Wales flurry to win.

In their second game, Scotland lost out narrowly against the French in a 16-20 scoreline but they did earn themselves a losing bonus point. However, it should be noted that it was a similar tale again with them putting in a rip-roaring first-half performance before falling away in the second half.

England Form

Form Coming Into The 2024 Six Nations

England opened their Rugby World Cup campaign with a 27-10 victory against Argentina and while they were underwhelming at times, they quietly went about their business topping Pool D before defeating Fiji 30-24 in the Quarter-Final. They narrowly lost in the Semi-Final 15-16 to South Africa before beating Argentina again, this time in the Bronze Final 23-26.

2024 Six Nations

England overcame an Italian scare in their opening Six Nations fixture, winning in Italy to a 24-27 scoreline with Italy grabbing a losing bonus point for their 3-try effort, which was more than England’s 2 tries.

Had it not been for a poor second-half showing Italy could’ve had their first-ever victory against the English, nevertheless in their typical stoic fashion in recent months, Steve Borthwick's side did enough to win.

In their 2nd game against Wales, they earned another hard-fought 16-14 win to continue their unbeaten start to the Six Nations and continue their unlikely Grand Slam quest.

Scotland Attack v England Defence

Scotland amassed a 27-point total in their victory against Wales. The first of their 3 tries came from Prop Pierre Schoeman before a brace of tries from winger Van der Merwe. Finn Russell was also faultless from the kicking tee with 3/3 conversions and 2/2 penalties, his performance will be key to Scotland’s chances.

Against France, they put 16 points on the board with White scoring a try and Russell again being faultless from the kicking tee making 1/1 conversions and 3/3 penalties.

England conceded 3 tries against Italy in their opening-round victory but improved in their second round of fixtures conceding 14 points including 2 tries against the Welsh.

England Attack v Scotland Defence

England, despite their bronze showing at the most recent RWC, are in a period of transition and in particular struggle to put points on the board. In their opening game against Italy, they were outscored in the try tally 3 to 2 with the English tries coming from Elliot Daly and Alex Mitchell. George Ford made 1/2 conversions and 5/5 penalties against the Italians, and he remains their main points threat with his exploits from the tee.

Against Wales the English scored 16 points with their tries coming from Earl and Dingwall with Ford making 2/2 penalties but 0/2 on conversions.

Scotland conceded 26 points against Wales including 4 2nd-half tries (not scoring a try in the second half themselves) to survive a Welsh onslaught to win the game. However, they tightened up against the French, conceding just 2 tries and 20 points against a more fancied French side.

Key Players

Finn Russell – Scotland

Russell is known for his attacking intent with a distinctive style of smart kicks and flicks to try and create opportunities for his teammates. Russell was faultless from the kicking tee in their opening round 26-27 victory against Wales hitting 3/3 conversions and 2/2 penalties.

He continued his faultless kicking performance against France making 1/1 conversions and 3/3 penalties.

George Ford – England

The man who proved pivotal to England’s earlier victories at the Rugby World Cup in Farrell’s absence will be looking to cement a starting spot his talents deserve. With Marcus Smith out with injury he made 1/2 conversions against Italy and 5/5 penalties.

Ford had a mixed bag against Wales with a mark of 0/2 on conversions but 2/2 on penalties.

Scotland v England Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Scotland 20-17 England

Scotland have been a team of 2 halves in the Six Nations this year, usually being brilliant in the 1st half before faltering in the 2nd half. Interestingly enough they have had the better of England in the Calcutta Cup in recent years and come into this game as favourites due in large part to home advantage.

England are going through a period of transition, but like their performances in the World Cup, there seems to be a stoicism about the English side who continue to pick up victories despite being less than impressive at times.

This will be an extremely tight game and one that will likely be decided in the dying minutes.

Best Bet: van der Merwe First Try-Scorer @ 7/1
