Spain’s Form

Spain come into this game off the back of a fantastic performance in their World Cup opener against Costa Rica. The Spanish won that game 7-0 as they played the best football of any team in the tournament in the opening round.

While Costa Rica are one of the weaker teams at the tournament it would be a mistake to not acknowledge just how good Spain looked in that game as they dominated possession and were incisive with their attacking play. Spain are the 7th ranked team in the world according to FIFA’s World Rankings.

Germany’s Form

Germany suffered an embarrassing defeat in their opening game at this World Cup. They controlled the game for large periods against Japan and looked like they would coast to a victory.

Unfortunately for the Germans they only scored one goal which didn’t reflect their dominance in the first sixty minutes of the game. In the 75th minute they were caught out in defence and Japan scored an equaliser that rocked Germany. The second goal from the Japanese just minutes later came from some slack German defending.

Despite this slow tournament start, this German side are still among the world’s best and their world ranking of 11th is proof of that.

How The Two Teams Match Up - Spain vs Germany Prediction

Spain’s Attack

Spain showed in the first game against Costa Rica that they have one of the most lethal attacks at this World Cup. They employed a 4-3-3 formation in the last game and I would expect them to stick with this set up throughout the tournament.

The one issue you might pick out with this Spain attack is that they don’t have an out and out number nine in their team. Alvaro Morata can play that role but coach Luis Enrique has opted not to start the Atletico Madrid man in his side.

The way that this team likes to play I think it suits them to not have a true centre forward as Enrique encourages his players to be in perpetual motion in the attacking third. Ferran Torres looks to be Spain’s biggest scoring threat after his two-goal performance last time out.

Germany’s Defence

The Germans set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Japan and I would expect them to stick with this against Spain. Left back Raum played like a winger when Germany had the ball and it will be interesting to see if he is so eager to get forward in this game. I would expect that he plays a little more conservatively here and holds his position in the backline more often than not.

There is a chance that manager Hansi Flick opts to shake things up after the defeat against Japan. I don’t see any of those changes coming in the defence as the four that started last time look to be the best they have to offer.

Gundogan and Kimmich will play defensive midfield roles as they try to protect the back four from Spain’s intricate passing game.

Germany’s Attack

Germany could only manage a goal against Japan in their opening game at this tournament. It’s incredible that they couldn’t find the back of the net more than once given their 25 shots at the Japan goal, nine of those shots were on target too.

The Germans also dominated possession against the Japanese as they enjoyed possession of the ball 74% of the time. If we’re to take a look at xG (expected goals) we will see that Germany created 3.53 xG which indicates that their goal scoring woes last time out had more to do with bad luck than poor attacking play.

The youngster Jama Musiala looked menacing in attack when he was on the pitch and he looks like the player that could unlock this Spain defence from an advanced midfield position.

Spain’s Defence

This game against Germany’s attacking players is going to be a massive step up in class for Spain’s defence. In truth, there was little defending to be done against Costa Rica as the Spanish dominated possession at a mark of 82%.

Coach Luis Enrique made an interesting call to start Man City midfielder Rodri as a centre back in the last game. It will be fascinating to watch if he keeps Rodri in that position against Germany, moves him to midfield or drops him to the bench. Spain’s defence is going to be tested a lot more against Germany so if he sticks with Rodri at CB and it goes wrong there will be questions asked of Enrique.

Busquets is the best defensive midfielder of his generation and he will occupy that role again against Germany. As a whole this Spain defence looks like a very solid unit.

Spain vs Germany Prediction and Best Bet

The best bet here is Germany to win and over 3.5 goals at 13/2.

While Spain look to be in great form, Germany need a result here or they are likely out of the competition so I expect them to do what they need to in order to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Spain vs Germany Prediction - Goalscorer Betting Odds

I’ve picked out Jamal Musiala to score the first goal at 10/1 odds. Musiala looked like a constant threat to get his name on the score sheet against Japan and I think he can do just that in this game.

In the anytime goalscorer betting Ferran Torres looks like good value at 7/4 after his two-goal performance in the opener against Costa Rica.
