Wales v Georgia Preview

Wales’s Form

World Number (10) Wales are making their tenth World Cup appearance, with their best-ever finish coming when they finished third in 1987. At the most recent World Cup, they won their Pool which ironically included Australia, Fiji and Georgie, with Uruguay being the other side.

Wales won their Quarter-Final 20-19 against France before a narrow 16-19 defeat in the Semi-Final against eventual winners South Africa sent them to the Third playoff, which they lost 40-17 to New Zealand.

Head Coach Warren Gatland is amidst his second spell in charge of the nation, after replacing Wayne Pivac with the coaching cycle coming full circle. Depending on performance at this competition he has an option of a four-year contract.

Gatland’s tenure has been poor thus far though, in the 2023 Six Nations, winning one game against Italy and losing their other four. Their warm-up form started well with a 20-09 win over England. However, the wheels fell off in their final two warm-up games losing 19-17 to England and 16-52 to South Africa.

Wales opened their Rugby World Cup campaign with an opening weekend thrilling 32-26 victory against Fiji. However, had it not been for a Fijian fumble in the 81st minute they may have lost the game if the proceeding kick had been converted. In their second Pool Game, they beat Portugal 28-8 and that was followed by a brilliant 40-06 victory against Australia.

With their Quarter-Final qualification confirmed, Wales know if they avoid defeat here they will win the Pool and likely play the winner of Japan and Argentina.

Georgia’s Form

World Number (13) Georgia are in its ninth Rugby World Cup and having already been eliminated this will be their final game at the tournament. Levan Maisashvili first took up interim charge in 2020 before being officially appointed in 2021.

Georgia came into this tournament in good form (albeit against lesser opposition) following their 2023 Rugby Europe Championship winning five out of five matches. However, the step up in this tournament proved too much for the Georgians.

They lost their opening game 35-15 against Australia, and they drew their second match 18-18 against Portugal before losing 17-12 against tournament surprise package Fiji.

Key Players To Watch

Liam Williams

The Welsh -Full-Back has played the full match for his nation in their 32-26 win over Fiji and was rested for the game against Portugal before playing the full match against Australia again. However, he has yet to get his name on the scoresheet in France so will be looking for a confidence-building performance against Georgia in this one.

Beka Gigashvili

The Georgian prop currently plays for RC Toulonnais in the Top 14 and is one of their more gifted players in the squad. Beke scored a late consolation try in their opening tournament defeat against Australia. His story is incredible!

Wales v Georgia Rugby Results

Wales and Georgia have played four times with Wales winning out on three occasions and Georgia being victorious the once.

Their first international was in November 2017 where Wales won 13-6, their second game came at the 2019 Rugby World Cup where Wales again were victorious this time 43-14.

Wales then beat the Georgians 18-0 in the 2020 Autumn Nations Cup. However, the last time they played Wales lost out in the 2022 Autumn Nations Series 12-13.

Wales v Georgia Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Wales 28-3 Georgia

It’ll be interesting to see how Wales approaches this one from a tactical and rotational point of view.

Regardless, they should have far too much for the Georgians despite their relatively competitive head-to-head record.

Best Bet: Wales To Win Both Halves By 9 Points Or More @ 5/2
