Irish Premier Division 2024 Betting Favourites

Shamrock Rovers – 5/6

Rovers have dominated Irish Football since their 2020 Premier Division victory winning four titles in a row. However, despite having played 40% of their fixtures, struggling with injuries and only occupying 3rd in the Premier Division they remain favourites for the league at 5/6  for the 2024 season according to the latest football odds at BoyleSports.

With 16 games having been played in the season, the reigning champions have a mediocre record of 6 wins, 7 draws and s defeats from their opening 16 league games.  However, much of that has been down the longest injury list in the league with 9 players unavailable through injury or suspension. It's a testament to the clubs strength in depth that they remain very much in touch in the league.

I said at the beginning of the season that their Premier Division credentials will come down to two things, (1) Whether they choose to prioritise the much more lucrative allure of European Football this season and (2) whether they keep their motivation and focus levels up to win another league.

While their European run has yet to commence, for me they've shown enough of depth in their squad to cope with injuries and suspensions and remain in contention for Premier Division glory again.  There is a real sense of inevitability about their ultimate rise to the top of the table and when they do I can't see them being stopped.

Derry City – 5/2

Derry City have long been touted as the ones to end the Shamrock Rovers' domestic domination and their 2022 FAI Cup Final success showed us a glimpse of what this great club could be capable of. However, that as of yet has failed to translate into a League success and despite being 2nd and 1 point off league leaders Shelbourne  they've moved marginally out in the betting from 9/4 to 5/2.

Derry have some brilliant players at their disposal in the likes of Maher, Doherty, Duffy and Kavanagh Furthermore following the most drawn out transfer saga of the summer, they eventually signed Patrick Hoban from Dundalk in what was seen as a game changing move in the title race.

For all intents and purposes Hoban has delivered his side of the bargain with 40% of the seasons fixtures played he is top of the scoring charts with 9 goals, 1 ahead of Greene for Shamrock Rovers. However, I feel they would've needed a larger total at this point of the season to put proper pressure on Rovers' in the title race.

Shelbourne – 4/1

Shels continued their rise back up the ladder in Irish Football last season with their fourth-place finish under Damien Duff, confirming their European Qualification for this season following Bohemians Cup final defeat.

Ahead of the season though, most predicted Shelbourne to consolidate their position in the European place and maybe have a run in Europe during the summer. However, following a blistering start to the season they've catapulted themselves into a title race leading the league with a 28 point total 16 games into their season.

Duff certainly deserves massive plaudits for not only the job he is doing at Shelbourne but also his genuine passion for the league and coverage he has brought to it with his consistent positive comments about Irish Football. That being said, title talk is premature for this season.

Nobody expected Shelbourne to challenge and 1 victory in their last 9 games suggests there will be a return to their equilibrium position in the league in the coming weeks. However, their chances of winning the title are still far greater than people hypothesized at the beginning of the season.

Bohemians – 16/1

Bohemians started last season like a steamroll train and it had plenty of supporters dreaming of a shocking title charge. However, what started with great promise fell off the wheels and culminated in their FAI Cup final defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic last November.

However, following a difficult off-season for the club with the loss of their top-scorer Afolabi to the Belgian side Kortrijk they had a scattered recruitment drive on deadline day. While the talent they recruited was unquestionably promising there was always going to be a bedding in period for the new signings and so Declan Devine eventually lost his job due to poor results, mere months after bringing them to the FAI Cup Final.

Reynolds initially had a bounce when he took the helm but they've since returned to their equilibrium position of 6th and 8 points off the league leaders Shelbourne.

Galway United - 20/1

Galway were always going to be a great litmus test this season on the difference in quality between the First Division and Premier Division following their 25 point dominance of the former during the 2023 season.

To their credit, despite largely recruiting from that same First Division in the summer, they've adapted well to the division and have proven themselves difficult to beat. From their opening 15 games 5 wins, 6 draws and just 4 defeats puts them on 21 points and only 7 off league leaders Shelbourne.

If Caulfield and Horgan could mastermind a Premier Division success, it would go down as one of the biggest achievements in Irish Football in a long time. However, I think that's a little beyond their abilities for this season anyway.

Who won the 2023 Irish Premier Division?

The 2023 season was the 39th season of the League of Ireland Premier Division top-flight since it was established in 1985.

Shamrock Rovers won their 4th consecutive title and 21st overall. That title victory saw them qualify for the 2024–25 Champions League first qualifying round.

The 2023 FAI Cup winners St Patrick's Athletic qualified for the 2024–25 Conference League second qualifying round and the league runners-up Derry City and fourth finishers Shelbourne qualified for the 2024–25 Conference League first qualifying round.

Galway won the 2023 First Division gaining promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division this season. They are joined by Waterford who beat 9th placed Cork City in the relegation playoff. UCD were also relegated from the Premier Division after finishing bottom of the table last season.
