Despite clinching back-to-back division titles , the Eagles faltered somewhat over the second half of last season and fell at the first hurdle in the play-offs when going down 23-19 to wild card opponents San Francisco 49ers on home turf.
Talented but fractious wide receiver A.J. Brown was subsequently traded to the New England Patriots and yet another change in offensive coordinator saw Kevin Patullo replaced by Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion .
Otherwise, though, this settled squad again looks strong, with proven QB Jalen Hurts and powerhouse running back Saquon Barkley the big names in a no-nonsense offence.
Defensively, Jalen Carter will lead the high-pressure pass rush, while elite cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell provide great cover in the secondary.
Week 1 is just about getting the job done, however, and it has to be noted that Philadelphia’s winning margins over the past four season openers have been three points, four points and five points twice.

The future looked bright for the Commanders when they finished second to Philadelphia in the NFC East with a 12-5 record two seasons ago and picked up two play-off wins on the road.
However, last year they were hampered by numerous injury problems, including QB Jayden Daniels , and slipped to a sorry 5-12.
Patching up a poor defence was the main priority and that appears to have been done via free agency signings Odafe Oweh and Leo Chenal , plus number one draft pick Sonny Styles .
However, pre-season has not gone well, with left tackle Laremy Tunsil sidelined by injury and the Commanders struggling badly with the ball in hand during warm-up losses at Detroit and Baltimore .
If Daniels stays healthy, he does have some serious weapons out wide in Terry McLaurin and incoming veteran Stefon Diggs , but we need to see more evidence of the offence being on song before they get our support.
