The sight of KALPANA galloping on clear of the rest up the straight at Ascot has become a sweet and familiar one, including in the last two renewals of this race. A supporting role in the Arc did not prevent her from dominating this in 2025, so she again looks very much the one to beat when asked the same question this time round, even if stall 1 could provide a tactical complication. With Minnie Hauk's star having dimmed, it appears that Irish Oaks winner Johanna Walsh would provide the chief threat if the ground has not gone softer than good. Among those with serious work to do on the ratings, Believed and Lilt offer the best hopes of marked improvement.[Richard Austen] Show less
Spotlight: In a class of her own in the last two renewals of this race and majestic again at Ascot when she took the King George in July against the males; her Yorkshire Oaks win in August was a scrambled one (from Sparan Nua) after she promised to be firmly in charge over 1f out; fifth in the Arc (Europe's top race) at Longchamp 13 days ago was well below her best form but she fared a bit worse in it last year before going on to dominate this contest; zero shock if the same happens and she wins this prize for the third year running.
Spotlight: Beaten a head in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot and 4l winner of Irish Oaks at the Curragh (both 1m4f on good to firm); the latter was in smooth style, as she skipped clear over 1f out before Inis Mor ran on into second; sixth in the Yorkshire Oaks (good to soft) was disappointing but she'd be a serious each-way player if reverting to the Irish Oaks form.
Spotlight: The top 1m4f performer of her sex last year, beaten a head in the Arc; second to top-class male Ombudsman in 1m2f Group 1 at Royal Ascot but her form otherwise this season has been a far cry from her 2025 levels and she's finished behind Kalpana on last three starts, latest when tenth in the Arc.
Spotlight: Won 1m York Listed race on reappearance in May and it was just her third race when never-nearer sixth of 11 in the 10.5f Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) at Chantilly in June; not seen again for three months but staying-on second in Group 2 at the Curragh (1m2f, good) was her best yet; hung right on those last two starts but 1m4f seems to promise better still.
Spotlight: Third to Johanna Walsh in Irish Oaks at the Curragh (1m4f, good to firm); 25-1 but finished strongest when short-headed by Kalpana in the Yorkshire Oaks at York (1m4f, good to soft) and that's easily her best form, following a muted display when favourite for the Vermeille at Longchamp (good to firm) six weeks ago; each-way form chance judged on the York run and any recent rain would seemingly be welcomed for her.
Spotlight: 5l fifth to Kalpana in this race last year; registered a heavy-ground win next time and all 2026 races have been over about 1m6f, including second in the Group 2 Park Hill at Doncaster (good to soft) last time; back at 1m4f today, she probably needs the ground to be good to soft or worse.
Spotlight: An improved performer this year, including when she emerged on top in good scraps for a Listed race at Pontefract and Group 3 at Newmarket (both 1m4f on good; from Inis Mor last time); also ran well for sixth in a hot German Group 1 in between but today's race looks another tough assignment.
Spotlight: Third in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot (C&D, good to firm) and she's still on the upgrade, winning a Group 3 at Cork (1m4f, good) last time by half a length from today's 1.30 runner Amelia Earhart; although her form is well short of that provided by her top-rated rivals in this, she is one of the clearest candidates for further improvement.
Spotlight: Listed winner in May before peaking with placed efforts in the French (10.5f) and Irish Oaks (1m4f) in the summer; well adrift of three of today's rivals in the Yorkshire Oaks next time and pipped by Coedana in Group 3 at Newmarket three weeks ago; up against it.
Spotlight: Won Group 2 at York (1m2f, good) in May for the second year running; otherwise this year she's been a notch or two below her best form and is now 0-14 in Group/Grade 1 races, albeit with latest start (in Canada) her third very close call in one; new trip today in bid to break that deadlock.
Spotlight: French challenger who had almost a year off before this season; finished on the winner's heels on all three starts this term, in 1m2f Group 3s last two occasions, but absent since early June and improvement is needed; 1m4f is worth a go, seeing as her mother won the Group 1 Vermeille over it, but high-class half-brother Map Of Stars was best at 1m2f and he was by a stronger stamina influence.
Spotlight: Second in the 1m Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot; better form over 1m2f since when landing a Group 3 at Deauville and never-nearer sixth of ten in Group 2 at the Curragh; trying 1m4f might help but Lilt clearly had her measure last time; cheekpieces go on.
Spotlight: Made most when about 10l third in the Oaks at Epsom (1m4f, good to soft) but that's seemingly only lined her up for front-running duties at best since; moving into such a big lead set up an exciting finish to the Yorkshire Oaks but only while she subsided into seventh; huge outsider again.
