Last year's one-two Eternal Sunshine (second choice) and Apollo One are greatly respected again, while Desert Falcon and Toca Madera also come into the reckoning. The Strikin Viking and Annaf are lively outsiders but TWILIGHT CALLS has enjoyed a revival since being fitted with a visor and, with a strong pace looking assured, Richard Spencer's veteran can pounce late.[Paul Smith] Show less
Spotlight: The addition of a visor has had a galvanising effect this summer and he has won three of his last four starts, the latest a cheeky win at Glorious Goodwood (5f, good); this intermediate trip shouldn't pose any problems and going back up 4lb is manageable; tops the list.
Spotlight: A fixture in top sprint handicaps for a number of years and he has finished second in the last two renewals of this race; has a much lower mark this time around and his latest York fourth was a solid effort; unlikely to be far away.
Spotlight: Won here (5f, good to firm) in June; ran two fine races at Goodwood's Glorious meeting and again when third behind Air Force One at York last month (travelled best); soft ground wouldn't have been ideal when second of six at Goodwood two weeks ago; drying conditions would be in his favour and he has the ability to get involved.
Spotlight: Won a 5f handicap (soft) at this meeting 12 months ago; highly tried in 2026 and has come up short but he ran a fine race back in handicap company at Ascot (5f, good to firm) seven weeks ago, keeping on strongly for second; raised 2lb but this intermediate trip ought to suit and he won't mind what the weather does; contender.
Spotlight: She was completing a hat-trick when getting the better of Apollo One in this race 12 months ago (off a 4lb lower mark); took a while to come to hand this year but she's thriving again now, only just missing out at Hamilton last month before making all there (5f, good to soft) three weeks ago; good chance for a stable that has won three of the last four renewals.
Spotlight: Not the easiest to win with but he rewarded strong support when landing a Class 4 handicap at Sandown (5f, good to soft) two weeks ago; back up 3lb but that's less of a concern than the stiffer opposition.
Spotlight: Enjoyed his finest hour when rattling home to win a 5.4f handicap at York's Ebor meeting last month; more prominently ridden over 6f three days later and didn't quite see it out on good to soft ground; still has time to do better but this mark does demand it.
Spotlight: Won easily at Windsor (6f, good to firm) in June but he was hit hard for that success and has come up short in some goood sprint handicaps since; a similar fate could be on the cards this time.
Spotlight: Course winner (6f, soft); three 6f wins this year, two of them on good to soft ground at Chester; this will demand more but he is on an upward trajectory and that doesn't apply to many of these.
Spotlight: Made all in a 6.5f handicap at this meeting 12 months ago before a narrow defeat in the Ayr Gold Cup six days later (off this mark); first two runs this year weren't up to much but he had wind surgery in June and last month's midfield finish at York was much more like it; a visor is now reached for, replacing cheekpieces, and he is an interesting contender.
Spotlight: Ran on strongly to lead close home in a 5f handicap at Ascot in July; dangerous if returning to that level but his three runs since, while respectable, haven't been quite so good; unraced on slower than good.
Spotlight: Has generally run with great credit in handicaps for new stable this year; Toby Moore takes off a handy 7lb but others may have his measure.
Spotlight: Won this race in 2023 (soft ground) off a 9lb higher mark; it's generally been tough going for him this year but he retains ability and it doesn't require a huge leap of faith to see him go close; he could do with being more alert at the stalls though.
Spotlight: Coped well with the drop to 5f when winning the Gosforth Park Cup on Newcastle AW in June; respectable fifth in a Beverley Listed event (5f, heavy) 13 days ago, albeit without any excuses; this trip should be fine and he handles all ground; each-way shout back in a handicap.
Spotlight: As good as ever as a 9yo, recording four wins this year and running with credit in Listed event at Beverley (5f, heavy) 13 days ago; should run his race but there are likely to be better handicapped opponents today.
Spotlight: Group 3 win in Germany (6f, soft) last August; not at his best this year but there have been excuses on last two starts (returning from a break, then 7f) and the handicapper is cutting him some slack; return to sprinting will help and he is on a dangerous mark; revival possible.
Spotlight: Won two 5f AW handicaps early in the year; two good placed efforts at Chester this summer but he is up the weights as a result and may prove vulnerable back from three months off.
Spotlight: Two front-running 5f wins this summer; came up short in his hat-trick bid at Pontefract in July but ran well for second in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon (6f, good) four weeks ago; this trip should suit; each-way shout.
Spotlight: Classy as 2yo; yet to shine in 2026 but he has faced a couple of stiff tasks, including the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Ascot when last seen 12 weeks ago; gelded since; not a solid option.
Spotlight: Ran well on Southwell AW on his seasonal return but three heavy defeats have followed (either side of a wind operation); dropping down the weights but this looks a tough race in which to try to rediscover his best.
Spotlight: Won a big-field sales race at Newmarket for Oliver Cole last October; the handicapper has been in command this year and his stable debut five weeks ago was especially underwhelming; King Of Light looks stable's main hope.
